Hosted by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality – ISTAC Inc., Istanbul International Solid Waste, Water and Wastewater Congress 2013, was held between May 22-24, 2013 to provide sustainable management of solid waste, water and wastewater at the Halic Congress Center with the cooperation of Ministry of Environment and Urbanism, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, various universities from Turkey and abroad and prominent institutions/organizations.
Mr. Erdoğan Bayraktar, Minister of Environment and Urbanism of Turkey, Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu, Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs of Turkey, Mr. Erol Kaya, Chairman of the Environment Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Prof. Dr. Adem Baştürk, Secretary General of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Prof. Dr. Oktay Tabasaran, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Istanbul3WCongress attended the opening ceremony that took place with the participation of 1322 people from 47 countries.
The scientific program of the congress was composed of a total of 36 sessions, which were held in 6 parallel halls. During the scientific sessions, 164 oral presentations and 111 poster presentations were made from 29 different countries in Balkans, Middle East, Central Asia, Africa and Europe, and 27 keynote speakers from Turkey and abroad attended the congress.
In addition to scientific sessions, World Mayors' Meeting was organized in May 22, 2013. The meeting was held with the attendance of 12 Mayors, 9 Deputy Mayors and 73 delegations from 30 countries and 31 cities. The problems, proposed solutions and success stories of the cities regarding the solid waste, water and wastewater issues were discussed at the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, 'Istanbul Waste Consensus', which aims at developing sustainable solid waste management strategies in the face of global changes, was shared with the mayors and delegations attending from different countries of the world. The Istanbul Waste Consensus was signed by 14 Mayors and city representatives at the Congress. The sign process of the Consensus is on-going.
The training courses on the solid waste, water and wastewater were organized for the practitioners who had the opportunity to visit the facilities. In addition, technical visits were held on three main topics in parallel to the training courses for those who did not participate in the training courses.
In the Congress, which included exhibition, 52 sponsor institutions/organizations and firms provided information about the most up-to-date tools, equipments, projects by demonstrating their products and services on the 726 squaremeters area.
The Congress drew significant attention both in our country and abroad. We would like to thank all participants who contributed and attended to our Congress and hope to continue our cooperation in the future as well.
